A man convicted of rape has been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.
The Court of Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) for Crimes Against Women today sentenced Chongtham Dhurbajit Singh (28) s/o Ch Shyamsunder Singh of Nagamapal Phougeisangbam Leikai to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 10 years and pay a fine of Rs 5000 under Section 376 of IPC and another Rs 5000 under Section 417 of IPC.
In default of payment of the fine, the convict has to undergo three months of simple imprisonment, according to the Court's order.
The same Court had convicted Chongtham Dhurbajit on April 25 for committing rape by giving false assurance to the victim to marry her.
As the convict was produced before the Court from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa for sentence hearing, the Special PP prayed for sentencing the convict with life imprisonment with a fine.
On the other hand, the defence counsel submitted that the convict is a young man and recently been a father and prayed to show leniency towards the convict.
The Additional Sessions Judge, after hearing the Special PP and the defence counsel and perusing all the materials on record, sentenced the convict to rigorous imprisonment for a period of 10 years.
The Court's order said that the period which has been already undergone by the convict in judicial custody during the period of investigation as well as during the trial, if any, would be set off from the sentence awarded.
The Court also recommended for providing compensation to the victim under the Manipur Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault Other Crimes 2023 .
