Imphal, April 12 2013 : Renowned Shumang Leela artist Ayekpam Inakhunba has been conferred the Iboyaima Shumang Leea award for the year 2013 by Shumang Leela Council on the occasion of Shumang Leela Numit held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound here today.

Popularly known as 'Devadas Saaba', Ayekpam Inakhunba was conferred with the Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field Shumang leela.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a citation.

The function was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, MLA K Ranjit and Advisor of Shumang Leela Council as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honour respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam said that Shumang Leela is an art form of Manipur whose parallel is not to be found in any other part of the world.

Unlike in films, errors cannot be corrected in Shumang Leela and it is quite amazing to see the Shumang Leela artists performing more or less the same act in all the performances at different locations.

He also pointed out that Shumang Leela plays an important role in maneuvering the society to the right direction by giving useful information to the general public.

So, we need to respect the Shumang Leela artists and give them due regards.

Dr M Nara noted that Shumang Leela has been recently won appreciation from different corners of the world for its uniqueness and even Gurus of Shumang Leela have been called to USA for teaching the art form there.

As such, we need to have a cultural policy in the State at the earliest.

Earlier, an academic session on Shumang Leela was conducted with H Deleep, Director of Education (S); Ibotombi, senior NSD (theatre scholar) and P Dhanakumar, Chairman of Board of Secondary Education Manipur as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honour respectively.
