With Jiribam lately becoming a hotspot, the All Jiribam United Clubs' Association (AJUCA) and many other CSOs including JIMPAL have urged Chief Minister N Biren to visit the district and take stock of the situation there.
Speaking to the media at its office at Babupara today, AJUCA president M Mai-paksana said that the scale of violence seen in Jiribam since a few days back is unprecedented.
Saying that all Meetei villages in Jiribam have be- come unsafe lately, he added that they will submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister through Jiribam DC to deploy adequate Central and State forces in the district.
He also urged the State Government to give some sort of financial support to Meetei villagers who fled the violence.
Leaders of AJMP; MSF, Jiribam unit; AMAWOVA and AJUCA also attended the press briefing.
All Jiribam Meira Paibi (AJMP), Jiri Ima Meira Paibi Apunba Lup (JIMPAL), Woman Association for Socio Economic and Development (WASED), Jiribam Women Association of Kangleipak (JIMWAK) and Women Welfare Organisation of Kangleipak (WWOK) have also appealed to Chief Minister N Biren to come to Jiribam and see what is happening there.
Addressing a press meet held at the office of JIMPAL, All Jiribam Meira Paibi (AJMP) president S Sushila Devi said 71 houses have been burnt and hundreds of people have been displaced at Jiribam following attacks by "armed Kuki people" .
She said the violence broke out after suspected Kuki militants killed Soibam Saratkumar of Sorok Atingbi Khunou on June 6.Kuki militants have burnt houses at Bhutangkhal and Lamtai Khunou.
Woman Association for Socio-Economic and Development (WASED) president N Nivarani Devi blamed the Assam Rifles for not taking up appropriate measures in time to prevent the arson.
"Assam Rifles are strictly guarding Raniveng while it left Meitei settlements in Barak Circle such as Bhutangkhal and Lamtai Khunou etc unprotected.
The burning of houses could have been averted if there were AR like they are in Raniveng," she said.
She said CM N Biren should come to Jiribam and take stock of the situation for pro-active actions to curb violence and take appropriate action against perpetrators of the violence.
