NextGen Programme on minimal access surgery held at RIMS

Imphal, December 07 2024: The Department of Surgery, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, organised "NextGen: Nurturing the Future", a flagship event aimed at advancing surgical skills, under the aegis of the AMASI East Zone Chapter.

According to a release issued by RIMS, the programme held at Sushruta Hall, RIMS on Saturday, brought together postgraduate trainees in surgery from RIMS, INIMS, and SHIJA, along with esteemed nationallevel faculty specializing in minimal access surgery.

The programme was inaugurated by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, Imphal, who emphasized the significance of skill development in surgery for the next generation of medical professionals.

Prof M Rameshwor, Medical Superintendent (i/c), RIMS Hospital, Imphal and Dr Chetan Maibam, Organising Secretary, addressed the gathering and outlined the programme's objectives, particularly its focus on enhancing laparoscopic surgical skills among postgraduate trainees.

Dr A K Brogen Singh, Dean (Academic), RIMS; RK Mecott, Deputy Director (Administration); Prof S Ranita Devi, Head, Department of Surgery, RIMS, Imphal and Dr M Birkumar Sharma highlighted the importance of such educational initiatives.

The event featured a series of insightful lectures delivered by renowned national faculty members including Dr S Jugindro, Dr Devendra Khwairapam, Dr Ch Gyan Singh, Dr Chetan Maibam, Dr Chandragupta Chongtham and Dr K Lokendra Singh.

These sessions covered various aspects of laparoscopic surgery, providing participants with advanced knowledge and techniques.

An interactive session led by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma offered inspiration and encouraged participants to pursue on-going training opportunities in minimal access surgery.

The programme concluded with a hands-on session on laparoscopic surgery techniques using endo-trainers, enabling trainees to apply their newly gained knowledge in a practical setting.

The event was hailed as a grand success, offering invaluable insights and an enriching experience for all participants.

It is expected to significantly contribute to shaping the future careers of postgraduate trainees in minimal access surgery.

Meanwhile, the Psychiatric Department, RIMS, Imphal observed International Testing Week 2024 at Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) Centre, RIMS, Imphal on Friday.

It was organised in collaboration with the Community Network for Empowerment (CoNE), National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP) and Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MSACS), with support from Coalition Plus.

The event was attended by dignitaries including Dr S Gojendra Singh, Associate Professor and Head of the Psychiatric Department and RK Nalinikanta, president of CoNE.

During the event, free vaccinations were provided to individuals with Hepatitis and HIV .

About 40 individuals were also screened for Hepatitis and HIV.

Opportunities for treatment and support were extended to individuals diagnosed with Hepatitis C and HIV .
