Ukhrul, September 05 2026: Villages under LM Block, Ukhrul district have urged the Government to construct a bailey bridge over the Thoubal River at Kongsui area of Ringui village.

The people of Ringui and surrounding villages are currently relying on an old and dilapidated suspension bridge to cross the Thoubal River, enduring immense hardship for many years, especially during the rainy season.

However, the absence of a reliable and proper bridge has crippled transport and even normal commute, especially amid the ongoing conflict between the Naga and Kuki community, said locals.

Notably, the shortest route, Mahadev-Talui Pfutzero road, that connects western Tangkhul villages has been inaccessible since February this year due to the conflict.

The construction of a bailey bridge as an emergency measure will ensure smooth transport and tremendously cut the distance from Ringui to Imphal by 60 kilometres, said the locals.

During an inspection at the Kongsui site, where the construction of a bailey bridge has been proposed by the locals, Ringui village headman, Wungmathem A' Shimray, said that the villages under the LM Block urgently need a reliable bridge over the Thoubal River for their sustenance.

The headman said that the Kongsui site being proposed was also the site for construction of an RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) bridge which was cancelled after project approval.

The State Government, in 2010, had approved and sanctioned Rs 10 crore for construction of an RCC bridge over the Thoubal river in Kongsui area of Ringui junction.

This project, however, was cancelled without any information to Ringui village, said the headman.

While the village authority had approached the State Government multiple times, the bridge was never constructed, he added.

While an RCC bridge is the preferred choice, the people of the Ringui and surrounding villages urgently need a bailey bridge which will ease and ensure unhindered transportation, said the headman, seeking the attention of the Government.

Members of Ringui Village Authority, social activist Yansing Raleng took part in the inspection carried out at the Kongsui area.
