Imphal, June 05 2024:
Joining the world in observing World Environment Day today, a team of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) inspected the growth of trees planted by a separate MHRC team last year at New Chadong village in Kamjong district and found them thriving.
Notably, on October 2, 2023, an MHRC team led by Chairperson Justice UB Saha had planted trees at New Chadong during an interaction programme with the villagers.
Today's MHRC team was led by Member KK Singh and IGP Mamata Wahengbam, accompanied by Law Officer W Basantakumar and MHRC investigation team Inspector Lokendro and Sub-Inspector Peter Sony.
Expressing appreciation towards the villagers for nurturing the trees, the MHRC team further planted more than 50 new trees in and around the village today.
Ramthing Kasar, Village Development Committee Chairman of New Chadong village and social worker Asang Kasar also joined the tree plantation.
Later in the day, the MHRC team inspected the Primary Health Sub-Centre and Primary School at New Chadong.
It may be noted that the Village Development Committee Chairman had lodged a complaint with the MHRC to establish a primary school and a primary health centre at their village.
Due to the intervention of the MHRC, both the buildings were handed over to the relevant departments to set up the Primary Health Sub-Centre and Primary School.
