Imphal, October 02 2010:
Following a Supreme Court decree to look after the infrastructure of schools in the North Eastern States, Secretary of DoNER presided over a meeting to discuss the matter.
The Supreme Court ruling has come in the wake of reports of many children from the North East including Manipur being trafficked to Tamil Nadu on false promise of providing better education opportunity but were actually kept at orphanages to attract funding from foreign agencies.
National Commission for Child Rights had petitioned the apex court in this connection earlier.
Consequently, the Supreme Court passed a ruling directing the DoNER Ministry to look into infrastructural requirements of schools in the North East region so that the children do not fall prey to such frauds.
To discuss the directive of the Supreme Court, DoNER Secretary Jyotichandra presided over a meeting at New Delhi on September 30.The meeting was also attended by Education Commissioner Dewarangan, Director of Social Welfare Satyabati and Deputy Secretary of School Education N Prabin.
The meeting took note of the schools in the remote area of Manipur which have no proper building, hostel, teachers' quarters and proposed that the villages which have no school should be identified.
