As in the previous years, the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) will observe Manipur Integrity Day on August 4 in commemoration of the historic mass rally held at Imphal on August 4, 1997 .

As soon as the Government of India took a step which would challenge the integrity of Manipur, AMUCO organised a public rally on August 4, 1997.The rally participated by around five lakh people belonging to different communities turned out to be the biggest ever mass rally in the entire South East Asia.
The rally was followed by a huge meeting at Mapal Kangjeibung where people of all communities adopted a firm and unanimous resolution to fight collectively against all challenges to the integrity of Manipur, it said.
Unfortunately, a young boy Laishram Romeo, then reading in Class X at Mukta High School from Moirang Thana Leikai was going home after attending the historic mass rally.
He was sitting on the roof of a bus and he struck a tree branch.
The boy sustained injuries and succumbed to the injuries in the morning of August 5, 1997.On August 22, 1997, a sit-in-protest was held on one half of the road at Yairipok Singha Heirong protesting against the imminent threat to the integrity of Manipur.
But tragedy struck again as two young boys namely Nawaz Khan and Jamaruddin who followed their elders to the protest were rammed by a mini-bus (Canter) and killed.
Ruksana, another young girl, too sustained injuries in the same incident, it said.
