Imphal, August 30 2024:
The United Committee Manipur (UCM) today staged a protest demonstration against the attack carried out by some unidentified persons at its Lamphelpat office using firearms and explosives last night.
The sit-in-protest held in front of UCM office was also participated by members of CSOs which are constituent groups of UCM and other organisations.
Speaking to the media, newly elected UCM president YK Dhiren said that the attack at its office in the midst of the violent crisis besieging the State is rather unfortunate.
Even if any individual or group has grievances against UCM, they may convey their grievances as well as suggestions peacefully but attacking the office with bombs and firearms was too much, Dhiren said.
He also appealed to all concerned not to repeat such attacks.
AMKIL president Lourembam Nganbi said that the UCM did not come into being out of nothing.
UCM was set up to protect the integrity of Manipur and safeguard its territorial boundary.
The UCM office also served as COCOMI's office some time back, she said.
The UCM was vandalised and set ablaze in the night of February 23 this year and many important documents which were closely associated with the history of Manipur were lost in the arson, Nganbi said.
Attacking the UCM office for the second time is a matter of grave concern for it may create animosity among the blood brothers, she said.
She then appealed to all concerned to refrain from such attacks in the future and come out with a clarification for last night's attack.
Notably, some unidentified persons lobbed two hand grenades and opened some rounds of bullets at the UCM office last night but there was no report of any casualty.
Meanwhile, YK Dhiren (UPF), Khuraijam Athouba (IPSA) and Shanta Nahakpam (ACOAM Lup) have been elected as UCM president, vice-president and general secretary respectively for the term 2024-2027 .
