Imphal, May 30 2024:
The State has ample quantity of rice in stock and as such people shouldn't harbour any fear for shortage of the staple food, said an FCI official today.
While the FCI godowns in the valley have enough stock of rice for one month, godowns in the hills have enough stock for 6-7 months, said FCI Divisional Manager A Mahrili Mao speaking to The Sangai Express.
Godowns at Sangaiprou, Sawombung, Thoubal and Bishnupur have enough stock of rice for a month.
Godowns in the district headquarters of Senapati, Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Chandel and Churachandpur have enough stock of rice to last 6-7 months, said the FCI Divisional Manager.
The reduced stock of rice for the valley is due to the Lok Sabha elections and lack of adequate security escorts during April-May and incessant rainfall in the recent days affecting roads, said Mahrili.
As many as 100 trucks loaded with rice are stuck in Jiribam and another 50 trucks carrying rice are currently stranded on the route.
These trucks are expected to reach soon, and when they do, Manipur will have more than enough stock, said Mahrili.
Moreover, a goods train carrying 5,200 MT of rice to Jiribam is stranded at Haflong.
The train is expected to reach Jiribam soon, Mahrili added.
