Post poll alliance with some parties on the menu of MPCC
Cong set to name 19 more candidates

The Congress party is likely to bring its second list of candidates for 19 Assembly segments tomorrow.
Notably, the party had already named 40 candidates in its first list released earlier.
Speaking to the media at the 74th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi held today at Congress Bhavan here, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Nameirakpam Loken said that Congress party and some other key political parties have reached an understanding to forge a post-poll alliance.
He however stopped short of naming the parties.
He informed that Congress party would announce names of 19 other candidates by tomorrow.
Congress party had already sealed a pre-poll alliance with six Left parties.
The gathering led by MPCC president N Loken, CLP leader Okram Ibobi, CWC Member Gaikhangam, AICC (Manipur in-charge) Bhakta Charan Das and MLAs offered floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Speaking at the death anniversary observation, O Ibobi said that it's time for all the people of India to follow the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi so as to save democracy and secularism in the country.
Claiming that the Congress party has been working continuously to translate the principles and beliefs of Mahatma Gandhi into action, Ibobi pointed out that the United Nations has already declared October 2, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, as the International Day of Non-Violence.
People of different religions, faiths, languages and castes have been living together in the country, saiod Ibobi and added that Mahatma Gandhi firmly believed in secularism and the rights of every citizen to freedom of religion and speech.
He then called upon all the people to work collectively so as to safeguard the principles of democracy and secularism.
On being enquired if the Congress party was waiting for announcement of BJP candidates before it brings out its second list of candidates, MPCC president N Loken said that there is no question of waiting for the BJP's list of candidates.
He said that a meeting of the screening committee would be held at 6 pm today with Jairam Ramesh in the chair.
The MPCC president further informed that a second list of 19 candidates would be released tomorrow with due recommendation of the Central Election Committee leader Sonia Gandhi.
After a pre-poll alliance has been sealed with six Left parties, Congress party has talked with some other key parties and both sides have reached an understanding to forge post-poll alliance, Loken added.
