Imphal, Aug 29:
It is said that there is no electric transmission line of Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCI) in Manipur which is out of order and moreover the State Government does not use any of the electric towers of PGCI and the Corporation is not a power generating body.
The Corporation just collects the transmission charges.
According to a reliable source, transmission lines of PGCI, namely Loktak-Imphal 132 KV Feeder-II, Imphal-Dimapur Transmission Line and Loktak-Jiribam Feeder-II are currently being used in the State in supplying power.
Apart from these three, the rest of the transmission lines might be that of the State Government, and so PGCI has got nothing to do with their functioning or their state and conditions, the source clarified.
The source further clarified that PGCI is not a power generating unit.It just acts as a transporter of the electricity after dividing the whole country into five different grid zones, namely North, East, West, South and North East.
Keeping with the target of forming a National grid by 2012, connecting the lines of North, East, West and North-East grid zones have been already started, the source disclosed, adding that work on connecting with the South grid is yet to begin.
Through its bank account, the State Electricity Department has been incurring a sum of around Rs 1 crore every month to PGCI as transmission charge.
This is at the rate of 0.35 rupee per Megawatt hour, the source informed.
Supplying of power during the National Games held at Manipur as well as during the recent FIFA-World Cup Football was done through the lines of PGCI.
There is an optical fibre line among the existing Imphal-Dimapur transmission lines of PGCI, which when affected can disturb the functioning of the Mobile Phone service providers in Manipur, the source disclosed.
