Flood expels garbage from Lamphel to bazar areas

Imphal, July 29 2011: With Lamphel areas including the garbage dumping site remaining under flood water, the waste material generated in Khwairamband Bazar area has piled up on either side of the road for over 15 days now, posing health hazards not only to the women vendors but also to the general public coming to the market for their daily purchases.

On account of heavy rainfall, Lamphelpat and its surrounding areas including the garbage dumping site of the Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) have remained under flood water for over a month now.

Subsequently, IMC has also stopped its daily exercise of removing garbage from Khwairamband Bazar area.

With mounds of garbage generated over the last 15 days spilling over, there is strong apprehension of possible health hazards not only among the women vendors who have to inhale the putrid smell emanating from the rotten garbages throughout the day but also among the general public who come to the Khwairamband Bazar to make purchases.

Of all the Bazar areas, the situation on the Purana Keithel area appears to be the worst with mounds of discarded waste materials, including rotten vegetables, fishes, papers and plastic, torn baskets being scattered around making it impossible even for the passers-by to cross the area.
