UNC backs flag, Constitution demand : Lim call raised in representation to Amit Shah

Imphal, December 27 2020: Several Naga bodies under the aegis of United Naga Council have submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for recognition of separate Naga flag, Constitution and "integration of all the contiguous Naga areas" for a lasting final solution to the peace talks between Government of India and NSCN (IM).

In the memorandum, the UNC asserted "..with regard to Naga territory or Naga areas, we want to be very clear that, from time immemorial the Nagas living in the present State of Manipur have lived in our own ancestral domain with well-defined traditional boundaries."We do not share common land, origin or history with any other communities nor have we infringed upon the territories of any other community".

There have been three failed agreements, 9 Point Agreement 1947, 16 Point Agreement signed on July 26, 1960 and the Shillong Accord signed on November 11, 1975 .

These agreements couldn't bring peace as they failed to address the political aspirations of the Naga people.

Consequently there was an outbreak of violent armed confrontations since the 1950s between the Indian armed forces and the Naga army till the signing of the 2nd Ceasefire Agreement in 1997 between the Government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) .

Even though the Framework Agreement' was signed on August 3, 2015 after decades of talks, the Indo-Naga political conflict has not concluded yet, said UNC in the merhorandum.

The UNC reaffirms the declaration of the Naga people's mandate given to the collective leadership of NSCN on January 21, 2005 to settle the Indo-Naga political issue which should be acceptable and honourable based on the unique history and situation of the Nagas, said the memorandum appealing Government of India to "recognise Naga National flag and Constitution, the soul and body of Naga Nationhood and integration of all contiguous Naga areas" in the final agreement for lasting peace in the region.

The bodies which submitted the memorandum under the aegis of the UNC include Khurmi Naga Peoples' Organisation, Chandel district; Naga Peoples' Organisation, Senapati district; Joint Naga Council, Tamenglong district; Anal Naga Taangpi, Chandel district; Bujuur (Moyon) Aanchung Puh, Chandel district; Chothe Lim Abom Manipur, Chandel district; Kharam Union, Tamenglong/Sadar Hills; Lamkang Naga Kver Kunpun, Chandel district; Mao Council, Senapati district; Tangkhul Naga Long, Ukhrul district; Aimol Tribe Union, Manipur, Chandel district; Chiru Union, Senapati district; Inpuii Naga Union, Tamenglong district; UIPO (Khoibu) Maruo Koukartuo, Chandel district; Maram Naga Union, Senapati district; Maring Uparap, Chandel district; Rongmei Naga Council, Tamenglong district; Tarao Tribe Union, Chandel district; Zeme Naga Council, Tamenglong district; Paumai Naga Union, Senapati district; Thangal Naga Union, Senapati district and Sirti (Monsang) Uparuh.
