Pathetic Imphal-Jiribam road forces trucks to stay off

Imphal, August 27 2026: The Imphal-Jiribam road (National Highway-37), a vital lifeline of Manipur, is in a complete mess, with landslides reported at multiple locations and several vehicles stranded along the highway.

Moreover, no goods vehicles from Jiribam headed towards Imphal today, while no vehicles from Imphal left for Jiribam either, disrupting the movement of essential commodities along the route.

It is reported that the movement of goods trucks along the highway is likely to remain suspended tomorrow as well.

According to well-placed sources, the condition of the highway has severely worsened due to landslides and other factors at several locations along the highway such as Langnom, Nungkao, Nung Dolan, Barak, Kambiron, Nungba, Rangpang, Irang Bridge, Noney and Tupul.

A truck overturned at Nungkao while attempting to navigate the area which was hit by a landslide.

Officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) are currently engaged in clearing the debris using heavy machinery.

Meanwhile, several goods-laden trucks that left Jiribam for Imphal a couple of days back under security escort are reportedly still stranded at different locations along the Imphal-Jiribam road.

Some drivers told The Sangai Express that travelling along the Imphal-Jiribam road has become akin to driving on a road to hell.

They also said that the highway has remained in a pathetic condition for a long time.

The drivers further said that the highway becomes unfit for vehicular movement whenever it rains, alleging poor quality control in repair works and the lack of timely maintenance by the NHIDCL .

They said that landslide debris often blocks the drainage along the highway, causing water to accumulate and further damage the road during rainfall.

The state of the Imphal-Jiribam highway has been in complete mess for long.

Saying that they have been performing their duties despite the poor condition of the road and the threat posed by extortionists, the drivers expressed desire for the Chief Minister to urge the NHIDCL to take immediate steps to improve and maintain the highway.
