Manipur can come out of the crisis: Justice Kotiswar

Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh has categorically stated that Manipur has all the potential to bounce back from months of uncertainty and herald a new era of peace and harmony.
Notably Justice Kotiswar is the first Judge from Manipur to join the Supreme Court.
He made the statement during a felicitation ceremony held in his honour at City Convention Centre by the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) and the All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) today.
Speaking at the gathering, Kotiswar continued that Jammu and Kashmir, despite its distressing past marked with decades of violence and tragedy, has been witnessing an improved law and order situation.
If Jammu and Kashmir can, why not Manipur, the Justice said as he expressed desire for all the people to work together to restore normalcy in the State.
The felicitation ceremony was attended by Justice Ahanthem Bimol of High Court of Manipur, Justice A Guneshwar Sharma of High Court of Manipur, Justice Golmei Gaiphulshillu Kabui of High Court of Manipur, Puyam Tomcha (president AMBA), Yumnam Nirmolchand (president HCBA), Lenin Hijam who is an Advocate General of High Court of Manipur and Sarangthem Brajabihari who is the chairman of Bar Council Manipur as presidium members.
Kotiswar said that he is happy to be elevated to the Supreme Court but feels sorrowful seeing the situation in contemporary Manipur.
Many people have lost their near and dear ones while many others have lost their houses amid the unrest in Manipur, he sighed.
"Manipur as we all know since childhood is a wonderful place with beautiful valleys coupled with picturesque rolling hills," he said and added that Manipur, however, has been shattered at the moment.
Stating that a collective effort is needed to restore normalcy in the State, Kotiswar added that the crisis has to be resolved for the people in Manipur to live together harmoniously.
About his experience in the legal profession, Kotiswar said that he started practising law at the time when there was no regular sitting at Guwahati High Court.
The Justice said that he learned a lot about his profession by observing his seniors.
Saying that he got elevated to the Supreme Court due to the blessing of his elders and friends, he advised that one has to invest their time judiciously to achieve anything in life.
Legal profession is very unforgiving, he said and added every person who comes to a Court with an expectation that he/she will win the case which is not possible.
Registrar General of High Court of Manipur Ojesh Mutum, Justice Kh Nobin of Manipur Judicial Academy, Athokpam Nungsitombi, Commissioner of Law Department, Judges of Subordinate Courts , Senior Advocates, Advocates and family members of Justice N Kotiswar also attended the programme.
