UNC alerts for next phase of civil action

Senapati, July 27 2014 : The Uni-ted Naga Council (UNC) has alerted the Nagas in Manipur to be in preparedness for the next phase of 'civil action' which will be notified in a short period.

The UNC said this while acknowledging the cooperation and solidarity of the general public towards the successful observation of 48 hours bandh on all vehicular movement on national highways in 'Naga areas' with effect from the midnight of July 24 .

Earlier, a 24 hours peaceful total bandh was observed in Naga areas with effect from the midnight of July 15 in protest against the highly vitiated situation brought about by the Government of Mani-pur in Ukhrul district head- quarters by unprecedented mi-litarization and promulgation of Section 144 of CrPC in the wake of the unfortunate incident of the July 12, the UNC said.

According to the UNC, with no response to the protest, a memorandum was dispatched to the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India on July 18, reiterating that the Government of India should expedite the process of intervention with an alternative arrangement, outside the Government of Manipur pending settlement of the Indo-Naga issue and demanding the Government of India's intervention for revocation of the vitiating 144 Cr PC, removal of the communal state forces � Police Commandos and Manipur IRB from Naga areas and for ensuring that the Government of Manipur observe the ground rules of the Cease-Fire in letter and spirit, the UNC added.

It said, along with the above demonstration of our sentiments, poster campaign, protest dharnas, public curfew and lightning strikes have been observed under the aegis of the Naga frontal organizations in Ukhrul.

The UNC then stated that the safety and security of our people, however continue to be exposed to the Manipur police commandos and IRBs whose notoriety for violence and fake encounters have been established.

There can be no reason for their non withdrawal other than to sabotage the ongoing Indo-Naga peace process and the people's democratic movement by disrupting civil life, it further stated.

"While congratulating the tribe based organisations, the Naga frontal and regional organisations, the tribe students' unions and youth organisations for exercising utmost restraint and making the bandh peaceful and violence free, we hereby inform them to be in preparedness for the next phase of civil action which will be notified in a short period," the UNC said.
