Mayengbam Somorjit was assaulted by a mob at the market amid a massive rally organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) on April 25 .
Through the rally, COCOMI had submitted a 7-point memorandum to the Chief Minister, raising questions on key issues facing Manipur.

Today, student bodies, including Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS), Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK), All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), vehemently condemned the assault, and asked individuals who had incited and assaulted the former DESAM president to clarify and apologise publicly.

SUK said Mayengbam Somorjit has been in the forefront leading the student community in all major issues of the State, and it takes the assault on him seriously.
All individuals who incited the assault should surrender and issue a public apology, it said.
AMSU termed the assault on the student leader an assault on the shared unity of the community and said the "perpetrators are traitors among the community" .
