Ex-CM talks SoO with Governor

Imphal, September 24 2026: Ex-Chief Minister N Biren held a meeting with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and talked about restoring peace in the strife-torn State.

N Biren visited the Governor at the Lok Bhavan at 11 am today.

Speaking to media persons at his Luwangshangbam residence after his meeting with the Governor, N Biren said that he made certain suggestions to control the violence which has been raging in the hills of Manipur at present.

He said that the situation will only escalate and will have devastating impacts on the people if the Government does not take up strong actions to contain the violence without any further delay.

Even though some of the people displaced by the violence which erupted on May 3, 2023 have gone back to their homes, a large number of them are still unable to go back home.

Now with the Kukis and Nagas caught in a violent conflict, the number of IDPs may rise substantially, Biren reportedly told Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

Biren said that he urged the Governor to look into the grim situation and take appropriate measures urgently.

Biren also urged the Governor to take up the issue with Central leaders in order to work out a solution to the prolonged crisis.

He said that he appealed to the Governor to verify whether cadres of militant groups under SoO agreement and peace talks are involved in the ongoing violence.

It was in 2008 that the SoO agreement was signed between the Government and Kuki militant groups, and the total strength of the Kuki militant groups at the time was 2181.Biren said that he suggested the Governor to confine all SoO cadres to their respective designated camps.

The ex-Chief Minister further suggested the Governor to start the process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) after the raging violence is brought under control and IDPs are resettled.
