Imphal, February 23 2025:
Considering the current law and order situation in the State, reinstatement of a popular Government is unlikely in the next couple of days, said a well placed source.
Following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren, the Governor has been governing the State in the name of the President.
Earlier, a new, popular Government was expected within a short time.
But now this expectation seems to be disappearing on account of the State's current law and order situation, well placed sources said.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has been closely monitoring the State's law and order situation.
A popular Government may be reinstated only after the law and order situation is brought under complete control, said the sources.
Although there were no reports of exchange of firing in the last couple of weeks, the State has been facing serious law and order issue since the violent conflict erupted on May 3, 2023 which was followed by looting of arms and ammunition from police armouries.
In the meantime, extortion activities have grown to an alarming level while exorbitant illegal taxes are being levied on all types of goods transporting commodities on the National High- ways.
On the other hand, Manipur Police and Central forces have been working round the clock to maintain law and order.
Search operations are being conducted at different places and unlawful elements are being arrested regularly, said the sources.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is of the firm view that it would be better to reinstate a popular Government in Manipur only after peace and normalcy are restored.
It is being speculated that it may take at least three months for the return of an elected Government in Manipur, said the sources.
BJP Central leaders have even considered a plan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP National president JP Nadda visiting Manipur soon after a popular Government is reinstated in the State.
The PR Government has already started working on certain projects so that the same projects can be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visits the State.
The Civil Secretariat being constructed at Mantri- pukhri is one of the projects listed for inauguration by the Prime Minister.
As such, the PR Government has already set a deadline to complete the Civil Secretariat construction work by the first week of April.
