'Body will not be claimed until justice delivered'

Imphal/Moirang, January 23 2026:
The mortal remains of Mayanglambam Rishikanta, who was murdered in cold blood by suspected UKNA cadres, were deposited at the JNIMS mortuary late last night around 11.30 .
The post mortem was conducted at Churachandpur district hospital.
According to reports, Rishikanta's body was handed over to Waikhong police by Churachandpur police through Phougakchao Ikhai police around 10 pm .
The body was transferred after it was verified by the family members.
One of Rishikanta's sisters stated that they will not claim the body until justice is served.
Upon learning that the mortal remains would be taken to JNIMS, Rishikanta's siblings, accompanied by personnel of the Rapid Action Force and Phougakchao Ikhai police (led by its Officer-in-Charge), along with Waikhong police, made their way on foot to Phougakchao Ikhai Makha Bazar near the Garhwal Rifle camp for the verification of the body.
However, it is reported that relatives and the media team were not permitted to proceed beyond the checkpoint at Phougakchao Ikhai Bazar by Garhwal Rifles personnel due to security concerns.
After the verification and completion of the required paperwork, the body was handed over to Waikhong police, who then transported it to JNIMS.
Speaking to the media, one of Rishikanta's sisters stated that they will not claim the body until justice is served.
She also mentioned that the final decision regarding the murder will be made by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) that has been formed.
She also said that Rishikanta had been in a romantic relationship with one Chingu Haokip, a resident of Tuibong in Churachandpur.
Preparations for their marriage had been underway, but was halted due to the onset of the Meitei-Kuki clash in 2023, she added.
She further mentioned that Rishikanta had been working at CIPET in Nepal, and they only learned he had quit his job on December 17 of last year, after his death.
She went on to state that Rishikanta never informed them he was in Churachandpur.
