Imphal, August 22 2024:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee staged a protest in front of the ED office Imphal at Chingmeirong today and reiterated the party's demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee to investigate "MODANI mega scam" and immediately remove SEBI Chairperson from her post.
A large number of Congress leaders including CLP leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, former Deputy CM Gaikhangam and MPCC president MLA K Meghachandra took part in the protest.
The protest came following allegations by US-based short seller Hindenburg Research that Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairperson Madhabi Buch and her husband had stakes in obscure offshore funds tied to the alleged Adani money siphoning scandal.
Addressing the media during the protest demonstration, CLP leader O Ibobi came down heavily on the present Modi Government for not instituting a JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee) to investigate the "MODANI mega scam", and asked, "What is the relation between the Prime Minister and his few friends who have destroyed the Nation's economy for their own benefits?" .
MPCC president K Meghachandra accused the Prime Minister of shielding Adani and the SEBI Chairperson.
He said the alleged multi-crore scam should be investigated by a Joint Parliamentary Committee, and the Chairperson of the SEBI should be removed from her office.
AICC Executive Member of Law, N Bupenda Meitei, who is also a senior spokesperson of the Manipur PCC, questioned the "deliberate silence" of the Union Government on the matter.
Many Congress MLAs, former MLAs and Ministers, leaders and members of IYC, NSUI, Mahila Congress and Seva Dal took part in the protest.
They held banners and raised slogans demanding a thorough probe by JCP.
They said the Chairperson should resign to restore SEBI's integrity.
