Imphal, June 22 2024:
Chief Minister N Biren Singh left for Guwahati in the evening today and he has held a meeting with his Assam counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma on the Manipur issue.
A highly reliable source said the Chief Minister's visit to Guwahati and his meeting with Himanta Biswa Sarma came following a direction by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Chief Minister left Imphal at around 5.30 pm in an Air Asia flight and was accompanied by Leishangthem Susindro, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Public Health Engineering.
While the actual reason for the "emergency" visit is not known, N Biren Singh met with Assam CM and the two talked about security aspects concerning Jiribam, said the source.
The two discussed the build-up of armed Kuki militants in Cachar, especially on the banks of Jiri River and Barak River and the security threat the militants pose.
The source further said the two Chief Ministers discussed grounds for the two States to work in close coordination to curb the militants' aggression, and bring about a solution to the crisis.
While there is a possibility of Chief Minister N Biren Singh sitting together with some Kuki MLAs, sources said, he will return from Guwahati tomorrow.
