Imphal, June 20 2024:
Dhanamanjuri University students took out a march towards the Chief Minister's bungalow today demanding withdrawal of security forces from DMU campus and appointment of a competent Vice Chancellor and Registrar to conduct the long delayed semester examinations.
On their way, the protesting students were briefly intercepted at Ima Keithel by Manipur police after which an altercation ensued.
As they continued their rally, the students were stopped again in front of Kangla Western Gate.
Overcoming the roadblocks posed by the police, the students continued the march but were intercepted again in front of the Governor's residence.
Eventually, a team of 30 students were allowed to meet with Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Speaking in connection with today's protest, Irom Dimocha, president, Dhanamanjuri University Student Union (DMUSU) claimed that the six-year old university has never had a competent Vice-Chancellor or Registrar and further questioned how under such circumstances the university will ever produce good students.
Stating that the Government has remained deaf to the students' demands, the DMUSU president urged the relevant authority to resolve all issues pertaining to the university and ensure that the students can continue their education in a peaceful environment.
