Imphal, September 18 2026: Lok Sabha Member Dr Bimol Akoijam has asked the State Government to stop deceiving the people with the promise of updating the NRC.

Speaking to media persons at his Keishamthong residence on Thursday, Dr Bimol pointed out that no Chairman has been appointed for the Manipur State Population Commission till date.

The State Government's assurance to update the NRC without appointing a Chairman for the Manipur State Population Commission is nothing but deceit, Dr Bimol asserted.

Saying that he raised several questions on updating the NRC in the Parliament, he said that no proper reply has been received so far.

Asserting that the task of updating the NRC should be done by the Home Department, Dr Bimol asked the Home Department if they have initiated any tangible step to search and collect documents needed for updating the NRC .

It is the Home Department, not private indivi- duals, which must search and collect NRC data, he said.

It has been quite a long time since the JFD and the people have been demanding updation of NRC with 1951 as the base year.

It would be prudent for the Government to listen to this voice and translate the demand into action, he said.

If the State Government keeps on procrastinating the issue with the excuse that they (State Government) have been urging the Government of India, people's anguish will only multiply and it may lead to stronger agitation.

He appealed to both the Government of India and the State Government to address the people's concerns and update the NRC in time.
