Commandos of Imphal west district police have arrested one Chongtham Gandhi Singh (56) s/o Ch Kullachandra of Khoyathong Polem Leikai from his residence in the course of a search operation conducted last evening at the residential area.
Charging Gandhi of being a PLA/RPF activist, a statement issued by SP (Imphal West) L Kailun said a mobile phone handset (Nokia 1600) bearing sim No 9856321094 has also been seized.
On preliminary interrogation, he (Gandhi) disclosed that in collusion with one Mr shimray, an active member of the PLA, terrorised, threatened and extorted huge sum of money from the Imphal business community, the SP maintained while naming one Akoijam Rajen alias Rajendro alias Shimray (36) s/o (L) Budha Singh of Keishampat leimajam Leikai as the person under whom Gandhi worked.
The arrestee also distributed mobile Nos 9436178469, 9862259932 and 9862254482 of Shimray in small chits to the five traders to call up Shimray in order to make them pay up the demand money to the PLA/RPF, the statement continued.
The traders/business houses to whom the mobile numbers were distributed have been listed as NC Trader, Janata Store, Rishi Sharma (grocery store), Pardeep sharma and Surendra Traders, Paona Bazar near Pratap Hall.
In the other incident today morning, Imphal West police commandos launched search operation at Phumlou village based on credible information and arrested one KCP (MC) activist identified as Sanasham Dhanajit Singh (22) s/o S Inaocha from the Phumlou Mamang Leikai residence of the individual.
On preliminary interrogation, he disclosed of presently working under finance section of KCP (MC) and collected Rs 40,000 recently from the general public for party fund, the SP added.
