Imphal, November 15 2025:
Prolonged refusal to repair the Old Checkon to New Checkon road has forced people to come out on the street and shut it indefinitely.
While members of local clubs, Meira Paibis and locals enforced the blockade today, ropes were stretched across the road and clothes including Phaneks were hung, to symbolise public anger and deter people and vehicles from travelling on it.
The road will be shut until work to repair it starts, locals have said.
The public have made repeated appeals to the authorities concerned including the Public Works Department (PWD), however no steps have been taken up so far to repair the dilapidated section of the road, said the locals.
Citizen Club president Naorem Mahendra said the road is a major connectivity in the region that leads to many important Government offices including JNIMS Hospital, Imphal East DC and SP offices.
Many road accidents have occurred and the dust from the road has posed a health hazard to the locals and commuters, he said.
Mahendra said the people have been forced to block the road to get the authorities' attention.
The blockade will continue until the PWD and relevant authorities initiate works to repair the road, he said.
