NNN hangs up boots after two decades

Imphal, September 14 2026: After more than two decades of service, Newmai News Network (NNN) today has decided to bring its journey to an end.

NNN said it was birthed out of a need.

Its Editor, Witoubou Newmai, who had started his career as a reporter with various newspapers, was prompted to launch the news agency after sensing the dearth of reports from the hill areas.

To call Newmai News Network's initiation 'trouble-free' would be an understatement.

The non-existence of smart phones, social media platforms or digital newsrooms in those days, was undoubtedly one great limitation, but a larger impediment that Newmai News Network faced, and one that couldn't be ignored was the want of basic but vital key requirements of a setup of such significance as this was.

Recalling its humble beginnings, NNN said its initiation was far from trouble-free, particularly due to the absence of smartphones, social media platforms and digital newsrooms at the time.

Its reports began reaching newspapers across Manipur and even stretched wider to other North Eastern parts of India.

Newmai News Network gradually but clearly earned the confidence of Editors, newspapers, journalists and readers.

NNN said it takes pride in having contributed, however, a small part in bringing voices, events and stories of the people (particularly) of the hills to a wider audience, more so at a time when there was none obtainable.

However, noting the significant changes in journalism brought about by the internet, social media and digital news platforms, NNN said access to information has now become instantaneous, with news reaching people across the globe within seconds.

In addition to which, a plethora of journalists, reporters and digital news portals has grown than one ever could have imagined.

In this changed setting, the intent for which Newmai News Network was conceived has to a considerable degree been fulfilled.

According to NNN, people are now better equipped to tell their own stories, share information and reach a wider audience directly.

"Newmai News Network believes that it is hence time to acknowledge that change, and gracefully make way for a new generation of journalism and storytellers," it said.

This therefore is the official announcement that from the date of this notification, NNN will no longer be functional.

To all readers, media houses, Editors, fellow journalists, well-wishers and the people of the North East, NNN expressed its gratitude to the people.
