RIMS celebrates 54 years of service

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal celebrated its 54th foundation day at its jubilee hall today.
The programme was graced by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla as the chief guest.
The celebration commenced with the presentation of the annual report by RIMS Director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, highlighting the institute's achievements and progress over the past year.
This was followed by the prize distribution ceremony honouring meritorious students.
On the occasion, AK Bhalla said that RIMS, established in 1972, has become a premier centre of medical education and healthcare, with over 1,200 beds, nearly 2,000 staff, and modern facilities.

In 2024-25, RIMS served over 4.4 lakh OPD and 1.3 lakh casualty patients, he said.
Saying that RIMS provides major referral in cardiac surgery, oncology, and orthopedics with affordable care and subsidized diagnostics, the Governor highlighted the importance of research, global collaborations, and RIMS' vision to become an institute of National importance.
Highlighting the academic achievements of the Institute, he noted that RIMS has consistently nurtured generations of healthcare professionals.
With an annual intake of 125 MBBS students and 166 postgraduate students across 25 specialities, including superspeciality courses, the Institute continues to nurture and produce highly trained doctors and specialists, he said and added that RIMS has contributed more than 4,000 doctors, over 2,300 specialists, and numerous other healthcare professionals to the Nation over the decades.
Prof G Sunil Kumar stated that the Institute has completed 53 years of service, emerging as a premier centre of medical education and healthcare.
RIMS offers MBBS (intake 150 by 2026-27), MD/MS in 25 disciplines, super-specialty courses, and dental, nursing, and paramedical programs, with over 1,400 students enrolled, he said.
The RIMS Director announced the addition of advanced facilities at the Institute such as neuro-navigation, vitrectomy, OCT angioplex, C-arm, holmium laser, fibroscan, portable echocardiography, sports medicine ward, genetic lab, tobacco cessation center, renal transplantation, and open-heart surgery.
According to a press release issued by RIMS, the hospital recorded 4.5 lakh OPD visits, 1.3 lakh casualty cases, 44,000 surgeries, 6,000 deliveries, 54,000 admissions, organized 32 health camps, provided free treatment to over 16,000 PMJAY and CMHT patients, and achieved 194 research papers, 65 projects, four patents, along with National awards in oral health.
Looking ahead, RIMS plans INI status, 52 new faculty posts, 11 super-specialty departments, and a three-phase campus redevelopment with a 750-bed general hospital, 500-bed super-specialty block, cancer hospital, academic block, hostels, and residential quarters, reinforcing its position among India's top medical institutions, it added.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Prof N Jitendra Singh, former Professor, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology; Prof I Ibomcha Singh, former Professor, Department of Orthopaedics, RIMS, Imphal; ProfN Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital, Imphal; Prof L Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics); and Prof RK Lenin Singh, Chairman, Reception Sub-Committee of the 54th foundation day celebration.
