AMUCO, others observe Manipur I-Day

Imphal, August 14 2026: The All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), All Manipur Women Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), Committee on Human Rights (COHR) and the Manipuri Students; Federation (MSF) today observed the 80th Independence Day of Manipur at AMUCO office, Kwakeithel here.

The observation commenced with AMUCO president Sorokhaibam Sanjoy hoisting the State flag in front of their office.

Sanjoy said that Manipur which once existed for some years as a colony of the British empire regained its independence on August 14, 1947 .

Unfortunately, just two years after it regained its independence, India forced the king of Manipur, who was then only a constitutional head with no real political power, to sign the Manipur Merger Agreement on September 21, 1949 and Manipur was brought under the control of New Delhi on October 15, 1949, he said.

The feeling of anger and humiliation felt by Manipuri people when India forcibly annexed the independent Nation which had by then established its own elected Government, Assembly and adopted a written Constitution is still fresh, Sanjoy said.

He said that Manipur has been living like a colony or an occupied territory of Manipur since the annexation.

Had India not annexed Manipur, all the myriad issues plaguing the State today might not have surfaced at all, the AMUCO president said.

In the past, Manipur was quite strong in the fields of games and sports, human resources, culture and diplomacy, he said.

Nowadays, there is a notion that Manipur would not be able to survive without New Delhi's blessings.

Apart from taking total control of the State's economy, the Government of India has been threatening the very foundation of Manipuri civilization by subjecting the people to systematic repression, Sanjoy said.

Applying what they learnt from the British rulers, Indian leaders have been plotting constantly to create divisions among the communities of Manipur, he alleged.

"We must face all these challenges.

We must not only protect our land, we must also ensure that our future is secure and bright.

No outsiders will come to save us or work for our future", he said.

It said that AMUCO and its associated organisations observed the Manipur Independence Day at different districts and units including Jiribam.
