Imphal, October 12 2025:
A number of student organisations have strongly condemned the demolition of the historic Manipuri Rajbari at Shillong.
One of the students emphasized that history is the backbone of any society and described the demolition of the heritage building as a significant loss for the Manipuri community.
Claiming that the burning of the Puyas in the 18th century was an attempt to erase Manipuri cultural identity, he said that the demolition of the Manipuri Rajbari reflects the presence of similar destructive forces in the 21st century.
The student stated that the demolition of the Manipuri Rajbari is a deliberate attempt to undermine the cultural identity of Manipur.
Questioning why the Government failed to provide prior notice to the public before demolishing the Manipuri Rajbari, he pointed out that the INA Headquarters at Moirang and Thong Nambonbi (Hump Bridge) were renovated rather than demolished due to their historical significance.
The National Identity Protection Council (NIPCO) also condemned the demolition of the Manipuri Rajbari and demanded its reconstruction.
The Council insisted that those responsible for the demolition must be penalised.
