CM calls for sustained efforts to check HIV/AIDS

Imphal, August 12 2026: Chief Minister Yumnam Khem-chand Singh has called for sustained efforts to reduce cases of HIV/AIDS in the State.

The Chief Minister was speaking at a State-level launch of Intensified IEC Campaign 3.0 and State-level observance of International Youth Day 2026 at the City Convention Centre, Palace Compound here today.

Addressing the gathering Khemchand stated that the number of people infected with HIV/AIDS in the State has been reduced significantly, due to the efforts extended by the Manipur State AIDS Control Society and several NGOs in the State.

"Despite this achievement, we must continue to work towards reducing it further", he said.

He recalled that during the 1980s, the use of syringes for substance abuse was common among the youth of Manipur and this contributed to the rise in the number of HIV/AIDS infected persons.

Khemchand stated that Manipur is a State with a keen interest in games and sports.

He emphasised that focus on academics should be the first priority for students.

At the same time, engaging in sports and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also help them refrain from substance abuse, he said.

On individuals living with HIV, Khemchand lauded Khundrakpam Pradipkumar, an HIV-positive body-builder who has won the title of Mr Manipur and competed in many international-level competitions despite his HIV status being known to everyone.

Delivering his presidential speech, Sumant Singh, Commissioner (Health & Family Welfare) stated that the programme marked a strategic strengthening of HIV response, particularly in the area of communication awareness and demand generation of services.

The programme organised by the Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MACS) was attended by Anna Arambam, Project Director, MACS; staff and NGOs, among others.
