Imphal, April 11 2025: Satellite imagery can now help identify suitable crops for plantation in five districts of Manipur, thanks to advancements in technology.

This development could improve agricultural planning and decision-making in the districts-Chandel, Churachandpur, Noney, Pherzawl and Tengnoupal.

Speaking to the media in this regard, Director Horticulture and Soil Conservation K Devadutta Sharma stated that a pilot project was initiated with Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC) three years ago to identify suitable crops for plantation in the five districts using satellite imagery.

Saying that they have now got the final report of the project, he added that citrus fruits are more favourable for plantation in Chandel, pineapple in Churachandpur, banana in Noney, ginger in Pherzawl and heiribob (Shatkora) in Tengnoupal as per the findings.

He also said that they have started planting the suitable crops.

Dr Devadutta mentioned that surveying for suitable crops would be labor-intensive and time-consuming, requiring tasks such as collecting soil samples, setting up weather forecasting stations, and waiting for soil test results.

In contrast, using satellite imagery and an Artificial Intelligence tool can streamline this process and enable more efficient decision-making for crop selection and plantation, he said.

Stating that they used an AI tool to identify viable plantation options by incorporating data on crops found in Manipur, he added that the AI tool will provide more insights when additional data is added.

Saying that the project currently identifies only a few recommended crops due to its high cost, he, nonetheless, expressed gratitude to MARSAC for their cooperation and support in the project.
