Kangpokpi, August 09 2026: A devastating fire reduced a family home and three adjoining rented rooms to ashes in Kangpokpi on Saturday evening reducing properties worth an estimated Rs 1,34,94,500 to ashes.

Suspected to have been caused by a short-circuit, the fire broke out at around 7.45 pm on August 8 at the residence of 75-year-old Thang- jangam Haokip, a part-time carpenter and resident of Ward No 8 .

The blaze consumed Haokip's entire house and three adjoining rented rooms.

The affected tenants have been identified as Nengneichong Touthang (25) of Simol village; Lhingneilhai Haokip (30) and Jenneth Haokip (23), both of Joupi village.

While the fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, officials have not yet detailed the exact cause pen- ding investigation.

There was no evidence of deliberate setting of the fire during the preliminary site inspection.

At the time the fire broke out, two minors-- 13-year-old Nehminlal Haokip and 12-year-old Lamhoineng Haokip -- were present at the residence, while their parents were away.

However, the minor children were rescued through the timely intervention of local youths and neighbours.
