We are ready to resign, says Cong leader

Imphal, September 08 2024: MPCC president K Meghachandra has said that all the five Congress MLAs are ready to resign if resignation of all the legislators of Manipur will pave a path for normalcy to return in the State.

Addressing the media at Congress Bhavan today, K Meghachandra said that the Congress party is alarmed by the escalation of violence in Manipur.

Armed Kuki miscreants now deploy even sophisticated drones and rockets to attack innocent civilians.

Two Meiteis were killed in drone assisted bombing at Koutruk on September 1 while an elderly man, also a Meitei, was killed in a rocket attack on September 6 at Moirang, he said while condemning the attack on civilians.

Stating that India hasn't seen deployment of drones and rockets in ethnic conflicts throughout its history other than the recent incidents in Manipur, the Congress MLA asked why the Centre is still silent.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had condemned the Russia-Ukraine War and Israel-Palestine conflict on multiple occasions but he hasn't said a word about the Koutruk and Moirang incidents where innocent civilians were killed and injured in drone bombing and rocket attack, he added.

About the ruling MLAs led by the Chief Minister meeting the Governor and demanding reinstatement of the charge of the Unified Command to the State, Meghachandra asked what new drama the Chief Minister was playing by threatening to resign if he is not reinstated as the Chairman of the Unified Command.

Law and order is a State subject as per 7th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, he said and added that people are suffering because the State Government hasn't taken up any initiative to restore normalcy in the State.

He further stated that the Central Government is interfering in the work and affairs of the State Government and suppressing the rights of the latter and the people.

Apart from not helping the State Government to rein in the violence, the Centre has also been lying to the people of Manipur, he charged.

It would be better for all the MLAs to resign by setting aside all the differences if the Centre is not going to let the State Government work, the Congress MLA said.

All the five Congress MLAs are ready to resign if resignation of all the MLAs are indeed necessary to stop the violence and restore normalcy, Meghachandra continued.
