Imphal, August 07 2024:
The sudden flooding of the prefabricated houses at Kwakta Sericulture Farm under Bishnupur district this morning has been resolved by swiftly draining off the flood water with the use of heavy machinery, said Thongam Shanti, Moirang AC MLA.
During the Zero Hour of the State Assembly today, the MLA stated that the flooding was caused by a breach of the embankment along Moirang River around 6 am today.
Recent heavy rainfall caused water to flow down Thangjing Ching leading to swift currents in the river, which then ploughed into a narrow bridge privately built by the locals.
The 35-45 feet breach occurred at the location of the bridge and inundated the nearby prefabricated houses.
Notably, the third phase block of the prefabricated houses comprising 30 households occupying a total of 145 rooms were affected by the sudden flooding, the MLA informed the House.
Excavators were used to drain off the flood water and by 9:30 am, the water was successfully cleared out from the premises.
Video footage of the entire process is also available, he added.
Highlighting the additional help extended by various departments, he said that staff of Water Resources, Revenue and DC office have started repair work on the damaged embankment wall.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Fire Service team are engaged in cleaning the houses ravaged by the flood water.
The District Magistrate has also assured to provide 60 mattresses and 60 pillows for the affected families.
Additionally, in consultation with the District Magistrate, Rs 40,000 was handed over to an inmate who lost a bag containing the sum as it was swept away by the flood water.
The money was reportedly kept aside for a student studying outside the State.
The flood also destroyed books belonging to roughly 40 children.
In this connection, the Deputy Commissioner, Bishnupur has made arrangements to provide new books to the children.
He expressed confidence that by this evening, the inmates can go back to resuming their lives in the prefabricated houses.
Taking opportunity of the Zero Hour, Khangabok MLA Okram Surjakumar expressed distress at the plight of the inmates who had to wade in chest-deep water and salvage their household articles including clothes.
Though the flood waters have been drained out with the use of heavy machinery, he urged the Chief Minister to put more focus on alleviating hardships faced by the inmates and take up initiatives for their welfare.
