Imphal, July 05 2024:
The State Government is responsible for the flooding in Singjamei and adjacent areas following the breach of Imphal River at Singjamei Oinam Thingel, claimed New Development Organisation (NDO), Singjamei.
Speaking to the media while inspecting the breach point at Singjamei Oinam Thingel today, advisor to the Organisation Oinam Romen said that the river breached on the intervening night of July 2 and 3 .
He continued that several areas in Singjamei, Thongju and Langthabal are still flooded.
Saying that a water intake pump station was set up at the same spot where the river breached about four years back, he claimed that the youth clubs and people of the areas requested the contractor to build a RCC retaining wall on the river bank at the time of installing the water intake station.
The retaining wall was never constructed and in its place a simple wall was erected, he added.
The idea that a simple wall can hold back excess river water itself is surprising, he said.
Saying that the fissure has been mended by the people, he added that the river may breach again if there is more rainfall and the water level rises.
The river bank on the southern side of the water intake station and northern side of Oinam Thingel are also vulnerable, he continued and appealed to the Government especially the Water Resources Department to build a retaining wall on the vulnerable portions of the river bank.
