Government to increase scholarship money for students with disabilities : AK Mirabai

Imphal, December 03 2014 : Manipur's social welfare minister AK Mirabai Devi said on Wednesday that the Cabinet has taken decision to increase scholarship amount given to differently-able persons, and that steps have been taken to give cash marriage incentive award to either of the spouse with disability from next year.

Marking the International Day of Disabled Persons, 2014 at Khuman Lampak Kangshang, Mirabai also informed that scholarship money given to school children with disabilities from nursery to class v has already been raised to Rs 200 from Rs 40 and Rs 300 from Rs 60 for students from classes VI to XII, and Rs 400 and Rs 600 will be offered to students pursuing graduate and post-graduate from 2014/15 .

She further said financial assistance given to people with disabilities will also be increased to Rs 6000 from the earlier Rs 3000 .

Mirabai said unemployment allowance for persons with 40-80 percent disabilities from class X to graduate and post-graduate levels will also be increased to Rs 800, Rs 600 and Rs 800 .

The Manipur Cabinet has also given approval to give Rs 500 to each student with 80-100 percent disabilities from class X to graduate level and Rs 100 for post-graduate students, she added.

The minister said the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has given approval to set up a Composite Resource Centre in the state, adding the Government has arranged a temporary site for the centre at the Social Welfare office, Takyel near Deaf & Mute School.

She said the state Government is committed to taking up welfare programmes for the disabled people.

Organised by the Social Welfare Department, the function was also attended by Principal Secretary (Social Welfare) SK Dev Burman, Joint Secretary L Nabakishore and Director Dr Rangitabali Waikhom, among others.

Medal winners of Special Olympics World Summer Games�held on June 25-July 4, 2011in Athens, Greece�were honoured on the occasion.

Several children with disabilities were also presented with gifts and a ribbon campaign was launched to mark the day.
