TCP undertakes drive against traffic rules violation

Imphal, July 03 2019: After traffic signal lights have been installed at many major junctions of Imphal city and greater Imphal areas, Traffic Control Police (TCP) today undertook a special drive at Keishampat traffic point during which traffic rule violators were pulled up briefly and explained about the importance of obeying traffic rules.

Meanwhile, many quarters have expressed strong belief that violation of traffic rules can be mitigated considerably in case the special drive undertaken today is carried on regularly for sometime.

Some others opined that more stringent drives are needed to ensure that all motorists obey traffic rules.

As observed by this reporter, some rogue motorists drove past Keishampat traffic point even though the red signal was on.

But they were intercepted by Traffic Police and taken to the road side where they were explained about the importance of obeying traffic rules apart from advising them not to ever violate traffic rules again.

TCP also recorded details of the traffic rule violators as well as their vehicles.

One TCP personnel said that stringent actions would be taken up against all who violate traffic rules for the second time.

Even though a number of vehicles were intercepted, many others sped away past the red signal as well TCP personnel standing by the road side.

On the other hand, TCP SP Khoisnam Sarma said that the drive carried out today ought to be carried out every day but TCP could not carry out such drives at all major traffic junctions due to shortage of manpower and circumstantial difficulties.

Nonetheless, TCP would continue such drives and all possible efforts would be invested to make people understand traffic rules and the importance of obeying them, Sarma said.

Even through traffic signal systems have been installed at many major traffic junctions, the number of people who are strictly abiding by the traffic rules are very less.

At the same time, the Government has done very little to ensure that citizens obey traffic rules.

According to a report published by the Transport Research Wing of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 23 people died in every 100 road accidents which occurred in the State.

Yet, majority of the people seem shy of following traffic rules.

At the same time, majority of Traffic Police, Civil Police and VDF seem rather busy in checking vehicle documents and those who do not wear safety gears particularly helmets.

As such, many young boys feel reluctant to go for any work thinking about how they would be halted by Traffic Police, Civil Police and VDF in the name of checking their licences and vehicle documents, commented some citizens.

While many motorists halt their vehicles over zebra crossings, there are pedestrians who try to cross roads when vehicles have started moving.

TCP alone would not be able to check all such disorderly behaviour.

Such disorderly behaviour and defiant attitude are not restricted to citizens alone.

Many VIPs travelling in vehicles with flag post and security vehicles are also not obeying traffic rules and they do not respect Traffic Police.

Violation of traffic rules certainly multiply chances of road accidents and it also exposes people's indiscipline.

As such, there is a growing need to take stringent actions and impose substantial fines against all traffic rule violators, said some other observers.
