Imphal, November 02: State Police Department has inducted two new state of the art non-lethal water canon vehicles named Varun to be used for dispersing unlawful assembly of people.

A demonstration of the newly inducted water canon vehicles was held at Ist MR parade ground this morning in the presence of many top police officials.

Two teams, one of SP Imphal West led by SI N Ingocha Singh and the other team of SP Imphal East led by ASI Shimray displayed the power of the Varuns on several sportspersons who acted as agitators during the show.

Technically, Varun is mounted on a Tata LPT 2516 chassis.

The gross weight of the vehicle is 16,200 kgs including an auxiliary engine of Tata 697 TC for running the water pump.

It has the capacity of carrying 13,000 litres of water� 12,000 litres in the main tank and 500 litres each in two additional tanks attached to the vehicle.

Irritants or indelible ink are to be mixed in the water while using Varun to control mob violence.

The capacity of the pump is 3,200 litres per minute (LPM) at 8.5 kg per sq cm.

The two water canons mounted on the roof of the vehicles can spray water, irritant or indelible ink upto a distance of 50 metres, the effective distance range is 30 to 35 metres.

It can also traverse 15 degree downwards, 60 degree upwards and 210 degree in horizontal direction with a delivery capacity of upto 1100 LPM of water at 11 kg per sq cm pressure.

The movement of the canon are controlled through joysticks as well as manually from the control panel provided inside the cabin.

Besides this one set of spray nozzles is also attached at the rear and front side of the vehicle for protecting the tyres with a delivering capacity of 250 LPM of water and can cover 6 metres width at 7 metres distance.

Moreover, it is equipped with a CC camera, a 14 inches CTV, fog lights, canon search lights, siren, PA system with siren and an inverter.

This state of the art mob fighting equipment inducted in the Police Dept is said to cost Rs 28 lakhs each and is manufactured by Gujarat-based M/s Vijay Fire and Pumps Ltd.
