Imphal, June 02 2016:
Taking serious note of the ever worsening case of traffic congestion in Imphal city and surrounding areas, the State Cabinet has resolved to set up a traffic police wing which would be exclusively dedicated to traffic management.
According to Government spokesman M Okendro, the Cabinet meeting which started at 3 pm today at the Chief Minister's Secretariat was chaired by Chief Minister O Ibobi.
Though traffic management was earlier supervised by Transport Department, the Cabinet meeting decided to entrust the same task to the Home Department.
For this, a traffic police wing would be set up within the Manipur Police Department, Okendro informed.
Although traffic management was a responsibility of the Transport Department under the Government of Manipur (Allocation) Rules, 2009, it was traffic police who directly handled traffic management.
As traffic management is often related with law and order, there is growing need to entrust the same task to Home Department.
As such, the State Cabinet agreed to set up a traffic police wing under Police Department with one SP (Traffic) as its head.
The Cabinet meeting further agreed to create necessary posts for the proposed Manipur Technical University so that the university can commence its maiden session within the current academic year.
The number of posts approved by the Cabinet are 17 teaching staff and 57 non-teaching staff, Okendro added.
