New political party likely before polls

Imphal, September 01 2026: A new political party may come into being in the State before the 13th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections.

After the death of MLA Vungzagin Valte (Thanlon AC), BJP has 35 MLAs at present.

Sources said that hectic negotiations are underway to float a new political party together with some of the incumbent BJP MLAs.

Out of the 35 BJP MLAs, some of them have been taking active roles in the ongoing efforts to set up a new political party.

A key BJP MLA who is working hard to float a new political party met the Union Home Minister a few days back, said the sources.

During the meeting where a prominent BJP leader was also present, the BJP MLA requested Amit Shah to give him the vacant post of the president of BJP Manipur Pradesh.

A report of a survey on how BJP will perform or how many seats the party will win in the 13th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections was tabled at the meeting along with reports furnished by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) .

As per the reports, BJP's performance will not be very good.

Highlighting this scenario, the BJP MLA gave an assurance to Amit Shah that he will work with dedication to better the position of BJP provided the post of BJP Manipur Pradesh president is given to him, said the sources. However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah did not give any comment on the request for giving the position of BJP Manipur Pradesh president to the particular MLA .

Given the Union Home Minister's lukewarm response, a new political party named after the indigenous people may be floated before the 13th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections, said the sources.

The new political party may be named Indigenous People's Alliance (IPA) and at least six to seven MLAs may quit BJP and join the new party, said the sources.

Notably, BJP MLA L Susindro (Khurai AC) has already hosted a farewell party declaring that he was quitting BJP .

However, it is not yet clear which party L Susindro (Yaima) is planning to join.
