Students and the general public staged a massive protest when Manipur was struck by artificial famine in August 1965 .
On August 27, 1965, four student protesters died in the crackdown by security forces.
The students' martyrdom is commemorated as Chaklam Khongchat (Hunger Marchers' Day) every year, he said.
Driven by a consensus that the Government will not listen to the people's grievances and suffering until there is a common platform for the student community, a group of like-minded students set up AMSU, Malangba said.
In line with its legacy, AMSU will continue to safeguard the integrity of Manipur, work for students' welfare and take part in key issues of the State, he said.
On the current issue of NRC, Malangba said that AMSU fully supports the public demand for updating the NRC before the census.
He said that AMSU will take part with unwavering commitment in the ongoing movement to get the NRC updated.
Former AMSU president Lourembam Dilip, convenor of six student bodies Hijam Roshan, All Manipur Women Social Reformation and Development (Nupi Samaj) president Thokchom Ramani, Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup president Lourembam Nganbi, All Manipur Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup president Yambem Momon and Macha Leima advisor Khangembam Anandi were also seated on the dais as presidium members.
