Imphal, June 28 2011: With the water level of most rivers reportedly rising following heavy rain over the last few days, breaching developed along the embankment of Chandranadi over a distance of 20 feet near Chajing Arambam has flooded the surrounding paddy fields.

The embankment of Chandranadi reportedly caved in at around 7.30 am today.

Though the collective efforts of the local residents managed to repair the breached embankment, around 200 hectares of paddy field in Chajing Loukon have already been submerged under flood water.

On the other hand, overflowing water from Nambul river has reportedly flooded many fish farms in Nambol Naorem area apart from flooding residential houses and schools.

The flood affected people have shifted their livestocks on either sides of Tiddim Road.

Flood water have already created havoc in Uripok, Lamshang and Lamphel area.

Steady rise in the water level of Imphal, Iril, Thoubal and Nambul rivers have also created fear among the people settling in low lying areas.

According to report received from Irrigation and Flood Control Department, the water level of Imphal river at Minuthong and Lilong were recorded respectively 784.675 metre and 780.450 metre by 5 pm today.

While the water level of Iril, Nambul and Thoubal were recorded 783.925 metre, 782.975 metre and 777.200 metre respectively.

The rainfall recorded in most part of the State including the hill areas over the last 24 hours, that is from 8 am of June 27 to 5 pm of June 8, was also moderate.

The rainfall recorded in Kangpokpi of Senapati district was 57.00 mm while 61.00 mm in Saikul.

In Ukhrul district, the rainfall recorded in Litan was 21.00 mm.

In Imphal West, the rainfall recorded at Lamphel was 14.70 mm while 13.20 mm at Raj Bhavan.

The report said that water level of Imphal is likely to be risen gradually on account of heavy rainfall in the catchment area.

As a preventive measure, the Department has already opened two of the five sluice gates of Ithai Barrage and instructions have been given for opening the remaining gates if need be.

The Department has also activated its flood control rooms.
