In order to enhance the State's security arrangement, the State Government has started discussion at the highest level to strengthen the manpower of Manipur Police, Manipur Rifles and VDF, said the sources.
According to the sources, the State Government is of the opinion that there is an urgency to strengthen the State forces in view of the prevailing highly volatile situation in the State.
At present, the State forces have been working together with the army and other Central security forces to maintain law and order.
However, at times there are situations where State forces must be mobilized in greater numbers.
In such a situation, the State forces often face shortage of manpower, said the sources.
Some top officials of the State Government said that the State forces have to shoulder the primary responsibility as compared to Central forces when it comes to controlling public unrest and different kinds of unwanted situations.
Nonetheless, the State forces and the Central forces have been working together in order to control the current volatile situation in the State.

They said that out of the total 8110 vacant posts in the State Home Department, the Government has started discussing filling up at least 7000 posts.
Even though filling up these vacant posts will entail a huge expenditure from the State exchequer, the Government is mulling to start the recruitment process considering the fact that it will provide jobs to a large number of youth.
Chief Minister Y Khemchand may hold a Cabinet meeting by the second week of May and adopt a decision on filling up the vacant posts in the Home Department, said the sources.
The State Government is also considering adding a criteria that all the candidates who have completed physical test, written test, interview and medical test should not have any criminal record or police case.
Moreover, the State Government is working on a proposal to be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs for establishment of a women IRB battalion in Manipur, said the sources.
Notably, the Union Home Minister has already agreed inprinciple to the establishment of a women IRB battalion in Manipur.
The existing strength of the State forces is 40,000 and it includes 9000 VDF personnel.
