Conference on tribal freedom fighters concludes

Imphal, August 26 2022: The 4-day National conference on "Indian National Movement & Tribal Freedom Fighters of Manipur" in the context of the proposed Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters' Museum which began on August 23 at the Classic Hotel concluded today.

Thematic discussions and exchange of ideas and thoughts took place during the 4-day conference which had five different technical sessions.

The conference was aimed at concretizing the content of the proposed Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters' Museum.

The content drafted by the expert committee with the support of Regional Content Development and Approval Committee for the North and North Eastern Zone were deliberated during the last three days by eminent resource persons, historians, academicians, scholars, representatives and leaders of various tribal communities and stakeholders towards concretizing the content of the proposed museum which is of National importance.

The discussion in two sessions on August 26 was on "Making the Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters' Museum: Insights, Practices & Possibilities" .

Prof Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri, Chairperson, Regional Content Development & Approval Committee (North and North Eastern Zone) in his keynote address delivered online emphasized on the parameters and guidelines laid down by the National level committee and the need to expedite the museum project in Manipur.

Professor Dr Amareswar Galla, UNESCO Chair on Inclusive Museums and Sustainable Heritage Development while speaking on the theme underlined that the Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters' Museum is quite unique in the world.

He also pointed out that the distance of the site should not be an issue given the powerful symbolism.

It will also be the first female freedom fighter museum in the world.

Neetiraj Singh, Joint Director, TRI Madhya Pradesh; Dr N Sakmacha Singh and Mr Gitu Yaikhom, Museum Associates, IGRMS, Bhopal also made presentations.

Dr Tara Manchin Hangzo and Ms Lungthaona Rongmei, Members of Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes also participated in the discussions.

Various tribal leaders and stakeholders along with senior officers of various departments also participated in the workshop today.

The 4-day National conference was organized by the Tribal Research Institute, Department of Tribal Affairs and Hills, Manipur in collaboration with CSSEIP, Manipur University as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and supported by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.
