Imphal, September 25 2025:
The Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK) has expressed grave concern over the recent controversial deaths of patients at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), questioning whether the State's largest hospital requires a thorough overhaul from its base to the top.
In a statement, CCSK stated that the reputation of RIMS has been significantly tarnished due to allegations of medical negligence surrounding these deaths.
The public outcry persists despite the plan to elevate the healthcare institute to the level of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), it said and urged RIMS authorities to address the issues surrounding the recent patient deaths.
The Committee emphasized that a healthcare institute's excellence cannot be achieved solely through infrastructure development, as the moral responsibilities of its staff are far more crucial.
CCSK further stated that the medical fraternity's recent suspension of services due to a dispute between RIMS authorities and a patient's family caused panic among other patients.
People who came seeking medical treatment from even remote places were left unattended due to the suspension of healthcare service, it said.
The Committee noted that some greedy and money-minded doctors who practice VIP culture have disgraced the noble profession, which is otherwise revered as a beacon of hope for those in need.
There is also a prevalent practice among doctors to refer patients to specific private firms or clinics for tests, suggesting a potential nexus between the doctors and these facilities, CCSK claimed.
The Committee, on the other hand, urged the public to avoid mob culture and not blame the entire medical profession for the faults of some erring doctors.
