Imphal, December 22: Assam Rifles in Ukhrul under 10 Sector is organizing a fete and mela as part of the Christmas festival celebrations.

The mela being organized by the Assam Rifles is actively supported by the social and Non Governmental organizations such as Tangkhul Naga Long, Tangkhul Katamnao Saktong, Tangkriul Theological Association and Tangkhul Mayar Long.

The fete is being conducted on 21-22 Dec 02 at the TNL Ground at Ukhrul, has been amply named 'Peace Fete' to usher in stable peaceful environment in the district in the New Year.

The area wore a festive look and over 5000 people had gathered in the morning to attend the inaugural function organized by 20 Assam Rifles Commandant Col GPS Sawhney under HQ 10 Sector.

The function commenced with the arrival of the Commander 10 Sector Brig V Suresh Nair, SM and VSM.

Among the various events that highlighted the function was the opening peace prayer by Dr YL Mingthing, Director TTA.

Thereafter, Mrs Silla J Khongay, President, TSL thanked Brig V Suresh Nair, SM, VSM on behalf of people of Ukhrul for promoting peace and his contributions towards the development- of the region.

She appreciated the idea of this fete to promote better understanding between the people and the Assam Rifles.

Tangkhul cultural dance by the villagers from Tolloi was an excellent performance, which was appreciated by all.

Thereafter it was the martial art display of WUSHU by the team led by Mr Thingkhai of Somdal, which left everyone spell bound.

Brig V Suresh Nair, SM, VSM addressing the gathering thanked the people of Ukhrul for the wholehearted support and cooperation in maintaining peace in the region.

He outlined this peace fete as one to increase the understanding between the people and the Assam Rifles.

He hoped that the coming year would usher in greater peace and prosperity.

He stated that the present peace is as yet only superficial, for lasting peace the people should promote and sustain it.

He wished the people of Ukhrul joyous and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2003.After that he inaugurated the fete by releasing a white pigeon, the sign of peace and balloons in keeping with the festivities occasion.

30 stalls of various types including games, food were put up by the people of Ukhrul and Assam Rifles.

A notable stall was that put up by TML on AIDS prevention.

Music was provided by the Pipe and Jazz bands of.20 Assam Rifles.
