Imphal, June 22 2024:
Even as flood water has receded from Nagaram, locals are still finding it difficult to move into their houses due to accumulation of sediments and filth.
The air in Nagaram is filled with extremely foul smells of rotten things deposited by the flood water, and many locals have fallen ill.
Nagaram falls under Heingang Assembly Constituency and the area was flooded after Imphal River bank got breached at several locations last month amid heavy downpour.
Nagaram Youth Club president Johnson Awungshi said more than 500 houses were flooded and properties worth lakhs have been damaged by the flood.
While the water has receded, the dirt and filth deposited by the flood water have become a major health hazard for the people, he said.
The flood water brought all kinds of debris and filths which had clogged Naga Nullah and other drainages.
While the clogged drainages have been dredged and cleared, the filths have been deposited on the roadside and these have not been disposed of, Johnson said.
He said the foul smell emanating from the filths on the roadsides and houses have made it very difficult for the locals to move in and stay in the neighbourhoods.
He said many have fallen ill.
Some are suffering from skin diseases and other infections.
While the Imphal Municipal Corporation had started to dispose of some of the filths, it has now stopped the work.
There are still mounds of filths on the sides of Dingku road, he said.
Johnson further stated that the Nagaram area was inundated by flood water for a long period of time and as such, people are still facing difficulties in clearing the sediments/mud deposits left behind by the receding water.
When many people are still unable to move into their houses due to sediment deposits and the foul smell, locals are also facing shortage of water for drinking and daily usage.
The locals of Nagaram are buying water for drinking and daily usage, he said.
Johnson asserted that the Government authorities concerned should look into the issues Nagaram is facing and take up appropriate actions immediately.
The filths and the rotten smell may cause major health hazards.
While the local club and people are taking up efforts to clean and dispose of the filths, the authorities concerned should take up necessary steps for ensuring public health and safety, Johnson added .
