Imphal, May 22 2025:
The Gwaltabi incident was an insult to all the citizens of Manipur, and the enquiry committee that has been formed by the Governor is a "farce", COCOMI Women Front has said.
Speaking to reporters at the office of the COCOMI at Lamphelpat today, its women front convenor, RK Tharaksana said the Mahar Regiment's action on May 20 at Gwaltabi was disrespectful and it mocked the people of the State.
Forcing the journalists who were going to the Shirui Lily Festival to conceal "Manipur" written on the State transport bus was an open act of insulting the people and undermining the State's integrity, Tharaksana said.
The action of the Mahar Regiment most importantly has revealed their hidden agenda, she added.
Every genuine citizen of the State must condemn the incident in the strongest terms and voluntarily support COCOMI's 48-hour general strike called against it, she said.
Meanwhile, the Governor has formed an enquiry committee to investigate the incident.
However, this is nothing but a drama.
The people of the State can't trust such an inquiry, Tharaksana said.
The Governor, Security Advisor, Chief Secretary and the DGP must answer to the public for insulting the citizens of the State, she added.
Tharaksana further urged the people to support COCOMI's general strike wholeheartedly.
Some shops selling chicken, pork and alcohol were seen opened today, she said, urging them to close their shop s on the second day of the strike.
She also urged Government employees to support the general strike, and asserted that the COCOMI Women Front takes MLAs remaining silent on the Gwaltabi incident very seriously.
Several women leaders of the front were present at the press meet.
